4 Tips on Staying

It seems as though every time I get on track, really be on the beam and in the flow of things, there is another distraction. Sometimes so small it is just enough to trip over to let me know it is there. Other times there it is so great that if I allow myself, (and I have before) I can get so far off the road I was travelling, when I finally see where I am, I have to wonder how I got there. Other times, I can find myself "functioning" in the midst of the distraction but I'm spinning my wheels, not being my best self and really not getting anything of substance accomplished.

So how do you stay focused? What is the answer to stay focused on our businesses during the time of life's distractions? I want to share 4 tips on what helps me when I find myself being drawn away from my priorities and purpose.

The first tip is to get right back on track. I do not spend my time analyzing what happened and why. I have found that life will bring distractions. Sometimes I can see them coming, sometimes I cannot. I do what I know how to do and that is to pick up where I left off. Getting my hands and mind back to what I was doing before the interruption starts the wheels of my mind turning again in the right direction.

The second tip is to take action on the priority at hand. When distractions come, we can leave tasks we previously had scheduled undone. Depending on the amount of time lost, shifting clients and cancelling appointments is sometimes unavoidable and necessary. The first action to take is to work on the priority. Was there an upcoming event or deadline missed or quickly approaching? The first action is to work on the immediate, that way falling further behind is avoided.

The third tip is to ask for help. When distractions come and we lose focus, stress can build. Asking for help and delegating some tasks that we usually handle is a wise choice. When we refocus, it is a time to strategize, move forward and gain momentum. When we ask for help, we are simply saying that, "I need to be at a certain point, by a certain time and I cannot get there by myself." Getting the help we need from competent individuals will relieve a level of stress and move us to where we need to be with more ease.
